Return-to-Sport Testing in St. Augustine, FL

Don't Guess. Know You're Ready.

Athletes come to us when they want a real answer — not a date on a calendar. We use objective testing to tell you exactly where your body stands and what it takes to get back safely.

What Happens When Athletes Return Without Clearance

You're Cleared — But Are You Ready?

A calendar-based clearance tells you time has passed. It doesn't tell you if your strength, power, or movement quality is actually back. Many athletes return before their bodies are ready because no one ever tested it.

Re-Injury Risk Stays High Without Data

Athletes who return to sport with unresolved strength asymmetries or movement deficits face significantly higher re-injury risk. Without objective benchmarks, there's no way to know if those gaps have actually closed.

Guesswork Costs Time and Confidence

Returning too early sets athletes back. Returning too conservatively keeps them stuck. Objective testing removes the guesswork so athletes and coaches are working from actual data — not estimates.

Common Conditions We Treat

Who Return-to-Sport Testing Is Built For

These are the athletes who come to us for return-to-sport testing — and the situations where objective clearance makes the biggest difference.

Post-Surgical Athletes - Recovering from ACL reconstruction, labral repair, or other procedures and want objective data — not just a surgeon's timeline — before returning to full activity.

Runners Returning From Significant Injury - Stress fractures, hip issues, or lower leg injuries that required extended time off — and a structured return with measurable benchmarks.

Athletes With a History of Re-Injury - Those who have returned before and gotten hurt again, and need a more thorough assessment to identify what was missed the first time.

High School and Collegiate Athletes - Student athletes facing a return to competition who need formal clearance data that coaches, trainers, and parents can rely on.

Athletes Returning After a Long Break - Not post-surgical, but returning after months away from training or competition and wanting to know where their body actually stands before pushing hard.

Recreational Athletes Ready to Race Again - Runners and active adults who want to race, compete, or train at high intensity again — and want data before committing to a full training block.

How It Works

From First Call to Full Stride

Analyze

Every plan starts with a full movement assessment. Dr. Brooke digs into your history, how you move, and what's actually driving the problem, not just where it hurts. You leave the first visit with a clear picture of the root cause and a plan built around your goals.

adapt

Once the root cause is identified, the work begins. Dr. Brooke introduces progressive strength training designed to promote tissue adaptation, building the capacity your body needs to handle the demands of running, training, and competition without breaking down.

overcome

With the right foundation in place, the focus shifts to getting you back to full function and performance. You return to the activities you love, stronger, more durable, and with the tools to stay that way.

What Athletes in St. Augustine Are Saying

Here's what athletes who have gone through return-to-sport testing at First Coast Running Medicine are saying about coming back with confidence.

I’ve suffered from plantar fasciitis that prevented me enjoying walking my dogs and working out at the gym. Dr. Brooke Shivers provided treatment that is taking care the painful and debilitating foot issue. I’m back in action thanks to Brooke.
Jose Luis Ochoa
I went from not being able to walk to preparing for an ultramarathon after only 4 sessions. Dr. Brooke is amazing and the dry needling really helps.
Gemma Del Prato
Didn’t know what to expect at first but this experience has totally changed my mindset on how I workout. It has brought awareness to my movements and has helped with my recovery time immensely. I find myself doing things I used to avoid out of fear of getting hurt. This experience has taught me how to listen to my body and then tell Brook what it said so we can work on it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Athletes and families considering return-to-sport testing usually have the same questions before scheduling — here's what you need to know.

How is this different from a clearance from my doctor or surgeon?

A physician clearance is typically time-based — it tells you that healing has progressed on schedule. Return-to-sport testing is performance-based. We measure strength, power, and movement quality to assess whether the body can actually handle the demands of the sport — not just whether enough time has passed.

What does the testing session actually look like?

Testing typically includes a movement screen, bilateral strength and limb symmetry assessment, hop testing for power and reactive strength, and sport-specific movement evaluation. Sessions are one-on-one with your physical therapist and results are reviewed with you in detail before you leave.

Do I have to be a current patient to schedule testing?

No. Return-to-sport testing is available as a standalone service. You don't need to be a current or past patient to schedule. Many athletes come to us specifically for testing after completing rehab elsewhere or after a physician timeline has been met.

Will I get results I can share with my coach or medical team?

Yes. You'll receive a clear summary of your results — including symmetry indices, hop scores, and movement findings — that you can share with your coach, athletic trainer, surgeon, or any other provider involved in your care. The goal is to give your whole team the same data.

What if I don't pass?

Testing results aren't pass or fail — they're a map. If gaps or deficits are identified, we review exactly what they are, what they mean for your return timeline, and what work needs to happen to close them. Many athletes use this as the starting point for a structured return-to-sport plan with us.
